Our final derby for the Supa Quick Premier Interschools season comes your way this Saturday the 27th of August when the “farmers”, Boland Landbou and Oakdale clash in a massive encounter out in Paarl. These two schools regularly produce teams of outstanding quality from a very small player pool. With matches between the two always tightly contested.

Both schools are rarely out of the top 20 rankings and have produced numerous Craven week players for their two provinces over the years.

Matches between them are almost always evenly matched and bring out massive crowds of school supporters and schoolboy rugby fans from around South Africa. The last 10 years have been even with both schools winning five times and losing five times, the last being played in 2019.

Oakdale would love to upset the applecart in Paarl as they have lost the last two encounters and would love nothing better than to stop the rot in their rivals own back yard.

The two schools have been playing each other on yearly basis since 1992 and this year they will meet for the 28th time. The first couple of matches were very close and home ground advantage was a huge factor. It was only in 2001 that an away team won for the first time when Boland Landbou with a certain Derick Hougaard at Flyhalf, took the honours 15-0 in Riversdale.

For the next 8 years Boland Landbou dominated the Interschools and Oakdale could only win once in 2005 with the score of 8-6 in a very hard-fought game in Riversdale.

The 2009 Interschools to be held at Oakdale was abandoned due to flooded fields. The last 8 years again went according to home ground advantage. Currently Boland holds the overall upper hand by winning 17 of the 27 games played so far, while Oakdale have won 9 with one draw.

Boland did not participate in the early season festivals this season, opting instead to have a tour of Ireland to get the boys into shape for the tough season ahead. They did very well on tour winning all four games and were good ambassadors for the town of Paarl. Back home they struggled to find the same form they had on tour and were hot and cold. They suffered big losses against Grey College and Wynberg but did manage to draw against Paul Roos. Their local season stats (excluding the Ireland games) of played 15, won 5, lost 8, 2 draws and a winning percentage of only 33.33% tells the story of a very poor season by their own standards. They will look to this Oakdale game as a season saviour to at least end on a positive note.

Oakdale had an up and down season as well but did well to draw with Grey College in their 4th game of the season. They lost against a very strong Affies, but then ran into a purple patch winning 4 games in a row including wins against a very strong Outeniqua and Stellenberg sides. Their only other losses game against Winelands giants Paarl Gim and Paul Roos and they would like nothing more than to beat their other Winelands rival in their last game. Their 2022 season stats read, played 12, won 6, lost 5, 1 draw with a win percentage of 50%. Nothing spectacular for this proud rugby school and they will want to ensure that their season end on a high to get that last win to end of on a high note.

Rugby at Boland Landbou

Boland Landbou rugby produced their first Springbok in 1984 when prop Attie Strauss was picked for the tests between South Africa and the South American Jaguars.  They produced a further 3 Boks in Lock Hottie Louw (2002), Prop Deon Carstens (2002) and Flyhalf Derick Hougaard (2003). The latter becoming the darling of Loftus and the Blue Bulls with his match winning boot in the mould of their beloved Naas Botha. Old boys Hottie Louw and Deon Carstens have returned to help their Alma Mater in matters of rugby, and both have coaching roles at the school.  It is indeed great to see that they are ploughing their experience back into the school and its learners.

Rugby at Oakdale

Oakdale have produced to date 4 Springbok rugby players in Flanker Pedrie Wannenburg, Centre/Flyhalf Meyer Bosman, lock Johann Muller and prop JC Janse van Rensburg. Their latest export is loose forward CJ Stander who has represented Ireland and was picked for the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand in 2017.

The game will be broadcast live on Saturday, 20 August from 12h10 on SuperSport Variety 3
