After a 2-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic the biggest interschools rugby derby is back!

Paarl Gimnasium (Gim) and Paarl Boys’ High resume their rivalry this Saturday the 30th of July in a SupaQuick Premier Interschools clash live on SuperSport. The Bloedworse against the Galpille, North vs South. The 104th match between the two schools is set to kick-off at 16:00pm and take place at the Faure Street Stadium in Paarl.

The first match was played in 1915 when masters, schoolboys and old boys all played together. This was the format till 1927 after which it was decided that the interschools matches should only comprise of schoolboys. The current format as we know it today started officially in 1929.

Before the forced 2-year break, the interschools was only interrupted for one year in 1928 when for some reason lost in the midst of time, the derby did not take place.

The competitive nature of the derby is reflected in the average winning margin between the two schools which is only 5 points in over 100 games played. There have been 11 draws between them and three of those ended 0-0, the last one came in 1986. Both teams will have to fight for victory and the bragging rights of Paarl.

During the week there will be functions and reunion get togethers’ where old friends and foes will reflect on the glory days gone by.

The first battle on the rugby field will take place on Wednesday evening as the two Old Boy teams lock horns in what can only be described as a friendly but fierce game. Thursday afternoon sees the “Goffels” and “Hommels” (G and H teams) play their own unique brand of rugby. Friday morning brings atmosphere and anticipation as the business end of the weekend kicks off. Both schools will fill their halls with war cry’s and the “Big Brag” will be in full voice.  This is when the rugby and hockey players that have been chosen to represent their respective first teams on Saturday, are introduced and get capped.

Friday afternoon is highlighted by the U14A match and the “main” match of the day, the third team game, known among locals as the “Chiefs vs Chippies”. There are only four matches played on the Saturday. The matches start at around 12h00 with the U15A match, followed by the U16A’s, Seccies (Second team) and then the 1st XV.

 Paarl Boys’ 2022 Season:

Paarl Boys started their season at the Noord-Suid tournament, winning their first game and drew the second against a very strong Garsfontein side. They came unstuck against a very good Rondebosch team but picked themselves up again to win both their Wildeklawer games against Maritzburg College and Monument. A week later they found themselves up in Bloemfontein against a rampant Grey College outfit and after leading at half time, could not keep up with the boys from Bloem, and lost that game due to the high intensity Grey showed in the second half.

They again bounced back with good wins against Paul Roos and Bishops, continuing their good form, showing an upward trend coming into the interschools derby. Their players were well rewarded with their current form and seven players were included in the Western Province Craven Week team while another four were included in the WP XV team. Four of these players in Matthew Fick, Thurlon Williams, Jameel de Jongh and Shah-Jehaan de Jongh were included in SA Schools and SA Schools A teams. The De Jongh family can be proud of the siblings making these teams.

Paarl Gymnasium 2022 Season:

Paarl Gim is having a stellar season so far and have only lost 2 games against Affies and Paul Roos. Both these losses came as somewhat of an upset, but the games were so close that it could have gone either way. The Gim team looks fast and slick yet again with a massive pack of forwards and quick backline well directed by their Flyhalf, Liam Koen. They won against a very strong Grey College team and have put 50 points past five of their opponents during the season, they enjoy scoring tries and to keep them from doing so will need a huge defensive effort.

Paarl Gim had 5 players representing Western Province at Craven Week with a further 4 being selected for the WP XV.  Luca Bakkes, Emrique Liederman, Keanu Coetzee and Daniel Botha all made SA Schools and SA Schools A teams.

Rugby at Paarl Boys’ High School

Rugby is an integral part of the Paarl Boys’ way of life. It is important to win, but that should not be the primary objective. A sportsman may never be abused to ensure the success of a team. The primary objective at Paarl Boys’ High must be one of enjoyment, for both player and coach. Whereas they agree with the legendary Vince Lombardi when he said: ‘’Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing’’ they hold winning to be more than just points on the board. Winning relates to the values, commitment, and the pursuit of the best of one’s abilities.

PBHS has produced 21 players that have represented South Africa since 1906 of which 19 have been capped for tests. They have provided some of the most famous Springbok rugby players ever to have played in the Green and Gold. Players like Oom “Boy” and Fanie Louw, Piet “Spiere” du Toit, Mannetjies Roux, Ryk van Schoor, Carel Du Plessis and Corné Krige. Their latest contributions are lock Salmaan Moerat who captained the 1st team in 2016 and 8th man Evan Roos who represented the school’s 1st team in 2018 and scored a memorable try during the interschools game.

Rugby at Gim

Paarl Gim is without a doubt one of the big five rugby schools in South Africa. They have to date produced 25 Springboks of which 23 have been capped in tests for South Africa, the latest being Grant Williams.

Rugby started at the school in 1902 and in the early years no strict age-groups were defined and the schools operated as a rugby club, the staff frequently turned out in the colours of the school. The headmaster back then, FC Wahl also captained the school’s 1st XV!
