Garsies Pull Off a Late Smash-and-Grab Win to Triumph Over Monnas 31-28 in a Thrilling Sportsmans Warehouse Premier Interschools Highveld Derby on Saturday the 27th of July 2024.
The much-anticipated encounter between Hoërskool Monument (Monnas) and Hoërskool Garsfontein (Garsies) had all the makings of a memorable battle, and it certainly lived up to expectations. Under the highveld sun in Krugersdorp, the stage was set for a fiercely contested derby, and the players delivered a spectacle that will be remembered for years to come.
From the outset, it was clear that Garsfontein came to play. Dominating possession and territory, the visitors applied relentless pressure on the hosts. Their early efforts paid off when their dynamic flanker, Stephan Pretorius, broke through the Monnas defense with a powerful run to score the first try of the match. Fullback Handré Maree calmly added the conversion, giving Garsies an early 7-0 lead.
Garsfontein’s momentum didn’t falter as they extended their lead with a brilliantly orchestrated team try. Ruan Enslin capitalized on a Monnas mistake, following up a well-placed kick and excellent handling from his teammates to cross the whitewash. Maree’s reliable boot made it 14-0, leaving Monument with a mountain to climb early on.
Monument, however, was not about to roll over on their home field. After 22 minutes of relentless effort, they finally broke through the Garsies’ defense. Left winger Ernesto Oersen finished off a series of attacking phases, diving over in the corner to score. Caylem Schooney’s conversion brought the score to 14-7, giving the home fans something to cheer about.
But Garsfontein’s response was immediate and emphatic. Just two minutes later, a well-executed restart saw them regain possession and go back on the attack. Lock James Schnetler powered his way over the line, reestablishing Garsies’ dominance.
Monnas, showing true grit, fought back yet again. A brilliant piece of play from Hanno Du Toit, who stepped inside and offloaded to his half-back partner Evan Bernhardi, saw Bernhardi finish off a superb try. Schooney’s conversion brought the score to 21-14, keeping Monnas within striking distance.
As the first half drew to a close, Garsfontein earned a penalty, and Maree stepped up to add three more points, giving the visitors a 10 point lead, 24-14, at the break.
The second half began with both teams locked in a defensive battle, neither side able to break through. It wasn’t until 20 minutes into the half that the game sparked back into life. A quick tap from Evan Bernhardi caught the Garsies’ defense off guard, and he found Schooney in support, who dived over in the corner. Schooney’s superb touchline conversion brought Monnas to within three points, 21-24.
With just minutes remaining, Monument’s replacement right winger seized a moment of brilliance. Reading a wide pass from Garsfontein, he intercepted the ball and sprinted the length of the field to score. For the first time in the match, Monnas took the lead, 28-24, after Schooney’s successful conversion.
But the drama was far from over. In a heart-stopping final play, Garsfontein’s backs and forwards combined flawlessly, moving the ball with precision until it reached left winger Junaide Stuart. Stuart broke through to score, breaking the hearts of the Monnas supporters. Maree’s conversion sealed the deal, and Garsfontein snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
As the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read 31-28 in favor of the visitors. It was a match that showcased the resilience, skill, and passion of schoolboy rugby, leaving the crowd at Ras Van Rooyen in awe. Garsfontein’s late heroics and Maree’s flawless kicking proved to be the difference in a game that neither side deserved to lose.
