On a day where the weather mirrored the intensity on the field, Oakdale emerged victorious against Boland Landbou in a hard-fought derby that had everything: drama, determination, and a few surprises.

The match kicked off in a frenzy, with Oakdale capitalizing on an early Boland defensive error. Oakdale’s right winner Duraan Janse Van Rensburg intercepted a risky pass deep in Boland’s territory, crossing the line with ease before calmly converting his own try. The visitors were off to a dream start, leading 7-0 within just two minutes.

Boland Landbou, however, were not to be outdone. Their left wing, Enslin Claasen, showcased remarkable speed and agility just minutes later, cutting through Oakdale’s defense to score a brilliant individual try. The conversion was missed by Jayden Brits, but the hosts had made their statement: this would be no walkover.

The relentless Wellington weather made handling difficult, but it didn’t deter Boland’s scrumhalf Brits, who coolly slotted a long-range penalty to edge Boland into an 8-7 lead. The game ebbed and flowed with both teams showing glimpses of brilliance amidst the errors caused by the slippery conditions.

As the half wore on, Oakdale began to reassert themselves. After sustained pressure and good tactical kicking by flyhalf, Reinhart Viljoen, their flanker, Erick Steyn crashed over the line, regaining the lead for Oakdale, 12-8. But they couldn’t quite capitalize fully on their momentum, missing a penalty shortly after. Boland seized this opportunity and returned the favour of relentless pressure on Oakdale’s line, their fullback, Retagan Van Rooi, scoring their second and final try of the afternoon just before halftime to bring the score to 13-12 in favor of the home side.

The second half began with Duraan Janse Van Rensburg continuing his fine form in tough conditions, kicking a penalty to regain the lead at 15-13. Oakdale’s hopes took a hit when their inside center, Christiaan Vorster, was sent to the sin bin, but they managed to weather the storm. Janse Van Rensburg was successful from the kicking tee again, slotting two more penalties in quick succession to extend Oakdale’s lead to 21-13.

The game wasn’t without its controversies, though. Christiaan Vorster received a second yellow card, reducing his team to 14 men for the remainder of the match. Despite this, Oakdale’s defense held firm, keeping Boland scoreless in the second half.

In the end, it was Oakdale’s composure under pressure and ability to capitalize on Boland Landbou’s mistakes that made the difference. Despite being down to 14 men, Oakdale’s resilience shone through, holding Boland scoreless in the second half. Their tactical kicking and strong defense in horrid conditions secured a stunning upset over the home favorites, cementing this win as one of their most memorable in recent years.
