Outeniqua vs Paal Boys High School Historic Overview
Date: 14 April Kick-off: 14h00 Channel: SS 8

On Saturday 14th April Premier Interschools will me broadcasting its second instalment of the 2018 season when hosts Outeniqua will be playing Paarl Boys’ High. This being the year of the Paarl schools’ 150th year celebration and being unbeaten in 3 seasons on the local scene, the boys in blue have a huge target on their backs. The team will play under more pressure than their predecessors as they carry the pride and passion of a 150-year tradition and thousands of old boys and supporters. Coach Sean Erasmus will face his final and most difficult season with Paarl Boys in a time when much is expected of them. The experienced coach is however a man that thrives in these high-pressure situations and will surely keep the boys focused and well prepared for the job at hand.

That being said, the team will have to travel to George after their 150-year rugby festival to play against the local powerhouse that is Outeniqua.

The “Kwaggas” as they are known, is not a team to be underestimated at any given time. They have been a perennial top 10 ranked school for the last 10 years and have provided the bulk of the SWD Craven Week players for the region for decades.

Results through the Years

The two schools have a yearly derby since 2010 and have played each other 9 times since then. They have met on occasion in previous years, but not in the capacity of full Interschools as is the case currently. As can be seen from the results, the matches have in general been tight affairs with the exception being in 2017. The bulk of the games have been won by the Paarl team, but the margins remained very close as the average score is only 29-22 in favour of Paarl Boys’ High.

Rugby at Outeniqua

Outeniqua have a proud rugby tradition and is repeatedly found in the top 20 ranks of SA Schools, more often than not in the Top 10. To date they have produced 4 Springboks in Faan Conradie (1965) Johan Heunis (1981-1989), Marco Wentzel (2002) and their current and latest player, Warrick Gelant (2017).

The school hosts an annual u/14 festival over the Easter Holidays which is highly regarded and the top tournament for the age group in the country. Schools like Paul Roos, Paarl Gim, Paarl Boys, Waterkloof, Monnas, Affies, Grey College and Glenwood all send their youngsters to George to compete against the best.

Rugby at Paarl Boys’ High School

Rugby is an integral part of the Paarl Boys’ way of life. It is important to win, but that should not be the primary objective. A sportsman may never be abused to ensure the success of a team. The primary objective at Paarl Boys’ High must be one of enjoyment, for both player and coach. However, they also agree with the legendary Vince Lombardi when he said: ‘’Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing’’ they hold winning to be more than just points on the board. Winning relates to the values, commitment and the pursuit of the best of one’s abilities.

PBHS has produced 20 players that have represented South Africa since 1906 of which 18 have been capped for tests. They have provided some of the legends and most famous Springbok rugby players ever to have played in the Green and Gold. Players like Oom “Boy” and Fanie Louw, Piet “Spiere” du Toit, Mannetjies Roux, Ryk van Schoor, Carel Du Plessis and Corné Krige.
