On Saturday, 18 May, all roads lead to Stellenbosch when two of the giants in SA schoolboy rugby faces off at the beautiful Markotter fields of Paul Roos Gymnasium when neighbours Paarl Gimnasium comes to visit. The home team will be fresh after having a two-week rest coming back from Japan as Sanix World Youth Champions. The maroon machine showed the rest of the world just how strong they are by beating St Peters College of New Zealand 52-5 in the final. Visitors Paarl Gim will also be well rested after playing their last game against Grey College at Wildeklawer in early May. The latter game being their first loss of the season and the Paarl team will be chomping at the bit to have a go at the World Youth champs. This will be one of the match ups of the year. Both are rated currently in the top 3 teams in the country and there is little to choose between the two.
Paul Roos suffered a devastating blow when they lost centre and captain Ruben Labuschagne to an injury in Japan. He will not be available for the derby against Paarl Gim and is only likely to return at the end of the season. They however still have plenty of firepower left with props Robbie Rogers and Corne Weilbach giving the team a good solid platform in front for players like 8th man Jarod Cairns, flyhalf Kade Wolhuter and centre Tiaan Pretorius to display their own set of skills.
Paarl Gim will rely on experienced winger Stravino Jacobs to add to his record tally of tries, while players like flanker Pietrich Siebert and scrumhalf Bobby Alexander can switch defence into attack in a blink of an eye. Both teams have extreme speed out on the wings and their defence efforts will be tested to the utmost.

Rugby at Paul Roos
The words Paul Roos and rugby are synonymous as the great man was the originator of the now famous Springbok emblem and name for the South African national team. He is seen by many as the “father” of South African rugby and it is fitting that the school that carries his name is such a powerhouse in South African school’s rugby.
Paul Roos has to date produced the most South African players to represent their country on a rugby field with Juandre Kruger becoming their 50th player when he played against England at Kingspark on 9 June 2012. Their latest Springbok is utility back Damian Willemse who became Springbok no 910 in 2018 and Paul Roos’s 53rd player to represent his country.
