Hoër Landbouskool Oakdale vs Outeniqua High Historic Overview

Date: 26 May Kick-off: 12h15 Channel: SS 10

Historic Overview

Saturday 26th May brings an end to the first round of Premier Interschool derbies when Hoër Landbouskool Oakdale hosts rivals Outeniqua High from George. This will be the last televised match before the Craven Week commences during the July holidays but the action on Premier Interschools will continue after the holiday break.

This is the first time that the derby between Oakdale “Bulls” and the Outeniqua “Kwaggas” will be televised. The derby is affectionately known among their supporters as the biggest schools’ match on the South West Districts calendar by a country mile. These two schools have consistently provided the bulk of the players for the SWD Craven Week teams over many years and are without doubt the two powerhouse schools in the area. These games have always been very tough encounters with only two of the last 9 matches ending up in comfortable wins.

In 2009 Outeniqua was way too strong for Oakdale winning 54-3 and again in 2012 with SA Schools players like Warrick Gelant and DH vd Merwe they ran in comfortable winners against their old rivals. Oakdale however, have shown that they can hold their own against a big school like Outeniqua and since 2009 they have won 5 matches versus the 4 of the boys from George. The Kwaggas however had the last laugh when they pipped a very strong Oakdale side in 2017 by 19-15 against all odds in George.

Outeniqua 2018 Season

The Kwaggas had a much more difficult start to their season losing their first two games against Northvaal opponents at the North vs South festival but bounced back nicely at the Paarl Boys 150 year festival by winning both games against overseas teams. They then had to face their hosts of the festival at home and the No 1 team for the last 3 years was just too strong for the home team on the day. They had mix results at the Wildeklawer festival winning one and losing one, albeit the latter to a very strong Glenwood team currently ranked 3rd in the country.

Having only a 50% winning ratio so far will however not deter them come derby day at Riversdale. The Oakdale bulls can expect a fired up Kwagga team that would like to defend their title of “Champions of SWD”.
