Monument vs Waterkloof Historic Overview
Date: 12 May Kick-off: 14h00 Channel: SS 5
Hoërskool Monument (Monnas) will play Hoërskool Waterkloof on Saturday 12 May 2018 at Hoërskool Monument in Krugersdorp. This is the 5th derby in the Premier Interschools series for 2018 and promises to be a match of high intensity.
While Monnas and Waterkloof’s regular Interschools only started in 1996, this has become one of the most eagerly-awaited matches in the Northvaal region. Both schools are consistently among the top rugby schools in the country. They don’t get to play each other on a regular basis due to the different competition structures within the Northvaal region, but when they do get the opportunity, it is usually a highly entertaining match. Monument has the advantage in wins since 2005 with Waterkloof managing their last win in 2012.
Results through the years.
The two schools had very different starts to the season so far, Monument looks to be a contender for a top 5 spot for 2018 while Waterkloof is struggling to gain momentum and had some big losses against the top schools. Monnas have already played 12 games this season including the TUKS final on the 5th May where they beat Menlo Park in a closely fought match. Besides the one drawn match against Transvalia, the only blemish on their scorecard so far are the two losses at Wildeklawer against Paarl Gymnasium and Grey College, which in turn are currently amongst the top 3 school rugby teams in South Africa.
Monuments Season so Far
|2018/04/03||Cavaliers Rugby (AUS)||Win||48||14|
Waterkloof has had a very average season so far by their own high standards. They have played 8 matches and have only won two. It must be taken into consideration that four of those losses came against the Top 4 schoolboy teams in SA namely Grey College, Paarl Boys High, Paarl Gymnasium and Paul Roos. With this tough start to their campaign, they can only improve and will look to turn the tide in this match against another top contender in Monument. If they can pull off a surprise win against the Westrand giants, it might just be the kick off they need to revitalize their vigor for the season.
Waterkloof season so far
Rugby at Monument
When the school opened in 1921 ML Brink held a meeting of boys to find out what games they wanted to play. They all opted for soccer, as was the custom on the bare fields of the Highveld at the time, and he then democratically decided that they would play rugby. The school played its first match on 1 April 1921 and drew 3-3 with Krugersdorp High School.
Since then the school has had many great sides – as in 1924, 1953, 1979, 1980, 1984 and 1993 when the team scored 143 tries in 28 matches.
Monument first won the Administrator’s Cup in 1953. They won again in 1973 and then again in 1992 and for the seven years which followed. In 2003 they were Media 24 National Schools champions. These are all huge achievements given the number and quality of the competing schools.
After Brink, famous coaches have been Jan Lange (1936-53), Pa Pelser (the famous Transvaal loose forward and coach) and Hans Coetzee who still has a finger in many of rugby’s pies. Hans says nobody is compelled to play rugby, but the players live for the game.
In 1993 the 1st XV toured France and Britain and went unbeaten.
Monnas, as the school is usually known, has by far the largest representation of any school north of the Vaal River at Craven Week and in SA Schools.
